Ethical hacking, also known as penetration testing or white-hat hacking, involves the authorized use of hacking techniques to identify and address security vulnerabilities in computer systems, networks, and applications. Unlike malicious hackers, ethical hackers operate with permission and aim to improve security.
Ethical hackers are security experts who perform these proactive security assessments to help improve an organization's security posture. With prior approval from the organization or owner of an IT asset, the mission of an ethical hacker is the opposite of malicious hacking.

1. Purpose:

The main goal is to identify security weaknesses that could be exploited by malicious hackers (black-hat hackers) and to recommend improvements to enhance the security posture of the target systems.

2. Authorization:

Ethical hackers obtain explicit permission from the owners of the systems they are testing. This distinguishes them from malicious hackers who break into systems without consent.

3. Methods:

Reconnaissance: Gathering information about the target system to understand its structure and potential vulnerabilities.
Scanning: Using tools to detect open ports, services, and other exploitable points in the system.
Gaining Access: Attempting to exploit identified vulnerabilities to gain unauthorized access.
Maintaining Access: Ensuring continued access to the system to observe potential threats.
Covering Tracks: Ethical hackers document their actions for the purposes of the test but may simulate covering their tracks to mimic how a real attacker would hide their activities.

4. Skills and Tools:

Ethical hackers need a strong understanding of computer systems, networks, programming, and security tools. They often use the same tools as malicious hackers, such as Metasploit, Nmap, Wireshark, and others, but for defensive purposes.

5. Reporting:

After conducting their tests, ethical hackers compile detailed reports that outline the vulnerabilities discovered, the methods used to exploit them, and recommendations for remediation.

Ethical hacking is a critical component of modern cybersecurity strategies, helping organizations proactively protect their digital assets against cyber threats.
